The Trek Top Fuel is your dream downcountry bike. The 2022 Top Fuel scored first in Enduro magazines downcountry bike of the year test, and second in Pinkbikes. Featuring 120mm of front and rear travel, a 66 deg head tube angle, 76 deg seat tube angle, and snappy 435mm chainstays, this bike lets you climb up and dance down the trail like a mountain goat on crack. The spirit of the mountain goat comes with this bike, but the crack doesnt. I cant really help you with that one. Youll have to embark on a personal journey to obtain it.

This Top fuel is incredibly fun to ride. If youre bored of your long travel 29er that takes zero skill and dumbs down the trails, then this bike is perfect for you. Think about it: yes its nice and comfortable to be on your big cushy bike for the gnarliest part of the trail, but what percentage of your entire ride is the gnarliest part actually going to be? Five percent? The rest of the ride, your big bike feels sluggish and uninspiring. Take a step out of your comfort zone and dream with me. Lets swing a leg over this Trek Top Fuel! Now you are on the perfect bike for the other 95 percent of the ride. Gone are the days where you are simply winching yourself to the top. Youre now inspired on the climbs: setting PRs left and right and actually enjoying it! Hammer up to the top and immediately drop into the descent! BAM! This bike can handle it. You now find yourself dancing down the trail. This bike isnt a long travel sled that you simply hold onto and let plough. Youll need to be nimble and precise, but youll be having the greatest time of your life! The trail is now a playground with obstacles to dance around and features to gap over. The geometry of this bike allows you to still hit the bigger features, with a little finesse. Overall if youve been feeling a little dull or uninspired with your riding, then this bike is calling your name! Oh did I mention this Top Fuel has in frame storage? Ive been able to fit a very light jacket, 3 clif bars, 3 shot block sleeves, a tubolito, and a light inside the frame. All while using a 30oz water bottle. Never wear a hip pack again!

Now we will examine its upgrades. I bought this bike brand new this January from Epicenter Cyclery in Gilroy, CA, and immediately got to work making it the best version of itself. The current generation of SID Select+ forks are notorious for having bushing play out of the factory in the lowers. I noticed the bushing play first ride, and sent the fork to Rockshox for warranty. Rockshox sent back a custom build of the upgraded Sid Ultimate, with the better 2 RL damper instead of the stiff raceday damper. Thats a huge win! Arguably the best loadout of the SID fork. You get the lighter weight of the Ultimate lowers with the plusher 2 RL damper. This combo isnt even available to buy, you can only get it direct from Rockshox technical support! Lucky you! Youll have this fork on your bike. Bragging rights to the homies about a fork that theyll never be able to get.

Ive also upgraded the rear Deluxe Ultimate shock with a larger negative air chamber (MEGNEG). Treks suspension platform on the Top Fuel is known to be very stiff off the top which is nice if you want to sit high in your travel for a stiff pedaling platform, but not nice if you want any small bump sensitivity on the downhills. Sure you can run lower sag but then we run into the issue of bottoming out on every hit. The Megneg upgrade kit expands the negative air chamber of the shock, allowing for a FAR MORE sensitive initial stroke, while maintaining a supportive pedaling platform, and resisting end stroke bottom outs. This is the biggest upgrade that you can make to the Top Fuels suspension performance outside of machining your own link with custom leverage ratios.

Additional upgrades are quality of life stuff. 200mm XTR icetech rotors with the heatsinks makes sure you have enough braking capacity for any downhill. I was tired of bikes coming with flimsy rotors that overheat. Youll outride the geometry of this bike long before you run out of stopping power even on the gnarliest DH trails. Oneup carbon bars with ergon grips are the best combo for vertical compliance and a comfortable riding position. Oneup V2 dropper for the lowest stack height of any post on the market, and corresponding V3 dropper remote with the cushy thumb pad, Nice! WTB volt to replace the stupid bontrager saddle. The infamous Knock Block has been removed, along with the terrible bontrager XR4 tires. The new specialized Eliminator and Purgatory tire combo are actually really good! They have low rolling resistance, but defined knobs to hook up to the trail and grip. Id say dont knock it until youve tried it! A set of lightweight Rimpact inserts (80g each) gives you the support you need to corner these tires without folding, while protecting those carbon rims. The rims of course, have only the best valves: Peatys MK2.

To sum it up: I fixed any gripes that someone could have with the Top Fuel, replaced all the parts that sucked with the best, and now you get to reap the rewards.
