Description:

Selling my 62cm Black Mountain Cycles Road. This is one of the best steel road bikes of all times and ready for pavement or gravel. The bike was designed by Mike Varley and sold exclusively through his shop in Point Reyes Station.

The bike is in great shape, with a solid 1x build with Shimano GRX, Tiagra, Wolftooth, Thomson post, Pro bars, Fizik stem, very grabby Tektro brakes, Cane Creek headset, Shimano wheels with Panaracer Gravel Kings.

The saddle height in the pictures is 82cm. Incidentally, the Fizik saddle is NOT included.

I have a bike box if youre not local and need it shipped. Im not open to parting it out just selling the frameset right now, but I suppose you could ask.

Heres what Mike wrote about the bike on this site:

Blackx Mountain Cycles

(Edit Sept 1, 2020: The Road frame is out of stock and, at this time, has been discontinued. I’ll leave this page up for a bit for reference, but it’s completely sold out and no plans are in place for a reorder.)

I like to go on long rides. The longer I’m in the saddle, the more important comfort is to the ride experience. This is a major factor in how I came to the final design of the road frame. Geometry traits might be described as low bottom bracket, long chainstays, moderate angles and fork rake. This geometry, combined with supple, large volume road tires, give a magic carpet-like ride, gobbling up back-country roads like a bonked rider going after a Snickers bar and Coke.

The spring-like quality of steel means that the effort put into the pedals works with you. The frame rewards that effort by chomping at the bit to go. The geometry is tame when you want it to be, but the bike is ready to carve up twisty descents without any nervousness.

The steel used in the road frame is a heat-treated, double butted, 4130 chrome-moly tubing made by the leading steel tubing supplier in Taiwan. It’s tubing I specified for the ride quality I want and it rides great.

Some of the key features of the road frame are clearance for up to 33mm tires, an Eddy Merckx inspired graphic package, braze-ons for direct fender mounting for a perfect fender line (because fenders are the best in wet weather), and it’s orange.

More information on the road frame, including geometry, is available on the road tech page. Information on tire clearance is found here.

And don’t take my word for these frames, read the review by Bicycling Magazine. When I spoke with the editor, he said it was one of the more popular bikes that other magazine employees like to check out for rides.

This model was discontinued in 2020.

With the multitude of standards on bikes these days, the “need to know” info on any Black Mountain Cycles frame is simple, proven, and reliable.

  • I designed the frames to fit the Rivendell Jack Brown 33.3 tire with proper clearance. This tire is a true to size 33+ tire. An undersized 35 will also fit.

  • Brakes – use a long reach (47mm – 57mm) brake caliper. Recommended calipers are Tektro R539, TRP RG957, or Velo Orange Gran Cru. These brakes are available for sale with frames on the frame shop page.

  • Headset – Standard 1 1/8” external cup. A variety of headsets are available with frame purchase on the shop page.

  • Bottom bracket – Standard British 1.37” x 24tpi threaded x 68mm wide

  • Rear wheel spacing – 130mm

  • Seat post size – 27.2mm

  • Seat clamp size is 30.0mm.

  • Front derailer size – 28.6mm

  • Hub axles – Standard quick release (9mm front, 10mm rear)

  • The chainstay and seat stay bridges are equidistant and have an M5x0.8 boss for direct mounting of fenders.

  • The frame is equipped with down tube shift lever bosses. Shimano cable stop bosses are included with the frame.

Fenders – yes, please. I run a 28 tire with 35mm fenders in the wet season. Go for a 35mm wide fender or a 40mm if you can find one. A 45mm fender may fit with some modification/massaging. Then you might be able to fit a 32 tire, but like I mentioned 28 is what I run with fenders.

  • The frame is treated with black electrophoretic deposition coating, which acts rust-preventative layer, before paint is applied. The paint is a wet paint with a clear powder coat. The combination of this entire process costs more, but provides a super durable finish.

  • Steerer tube length frames 56cm and larger is 350mm and 300mm on 52cm and 54cm frames.
